The XTi is a fantastic camera to start out with, you're getting a great value for your money and it's compatible with the EF & EF-S lenses so you can upgrade to one of the newer popular DSLRs from Canon and still keep any lenses that you're using.
I have the Canon T3i and I sold the stock lens kit and use a 24-105 f/4 L series lens as my primary lens. It's fantastic all around except in low light; I want to get an f/1.4 prime lens so I'm set for indoor and night photography
