Do you guys have experience with advertising through flyers? How effective is it?

It's not too expensive to print and distribute hundreds of flyers, I'm wondering if they can lead to good results.

I don't like receiving flyers so I don't think flyers would be effective. Distributing them would be costly or would take a lot of time.

I think they would be most effective if you're promoting something local, or if you're tabling and trying to get people to remember you later on.

Soliciting is frowned upon in most places. The only way flyers would be a good advertising venture is if a community enjoyed soliciting in my opinion. I know I personally hate getting flyers in my car window, handed to me, etc.

The only time I can see flyers being acceptable are if they're put on a bulletin board and stand out. I actually am sometimes inclined to read them.

You would be spending quite a bit of money on printing out or buying the flyers to actually get any results. Nobody likes to have flyers handed to them. Perhaps if they're on a bulletin board (as the above post said) or somewhere public like a library, then they might get a few people interested. But then again, it depends on exactly what you're advertising.

I've been thinking about this and I think they're very effecting when you hand them out at a meeting or a tabling event. People will keep and reference the nicely designed and printed informational flyers and a lot of people will even pin them up in their rooms. This is awesome branding for the price, plus informational flyers help people know how they can get involved in your cause.

I think something to remember is that boring flyers may not attract much attention, but if it's creatively designed and printed on paper that feels great, people are much more likely to pay attention to a flyer.

I would have to agree with Matthew on the part about how effective it is to put flyers on bulletin boards.  I know when I am at the library or in the coffee shop I tend to look at the bulletin board to see what is going on locally.  I can't say I've ever participated in anything however but hey if something were to come up that I'm interested I have more luck looking at it on the bulletin board.
