Here's a tip I learned from an online marketer that should help anyone looking to get their name out for an online portfolio or website.

On Google people are engaged in a bidding war for the top search ads. This bidding war results in a huge CPM. This is why for most people the return on your advertising dollars isn't worth it when you buy search ads at Google.

Instead, his recommendation was to look at search ads on Bing when looking to do keyword-specific advertising. The ads on Bing look less like ads, and they are a lot cheaper to buy because there's less of an "idiot bidding war."

The search volume on Bing is lower, so you won't be getting as much traffic as Google can bring all at once, but it's a lot cheaper and more efficient in the long run.

I tried a lot og Google ads and on the displaynetwork the lowest I had to pay was 0,04 Dkr whish is a little lower than $0,01. Text ads are a lot more expensive and I often wondered if Bing was ok. Now I'm going to try :-)

I don't know about display ads since those are controlled by the market and by how much website publishers want in exchange for ad on their sites. However, for the search ads (these are the text ads that appear in Google Search), you'd get much more value for your money on Bing.

I haven't actually looked into Bing advertisements at all yet. I've only had experience with Google and, admittedly, only started using Google because of the name and how often I see their ads on the internet. I pretty much came to the uneducated conclusion of "well, if everyone's using it, including the big companies, I should use it too." Though that seems to have worked out, because I make a decent profit from using Google advertisements.

But this Bing thing I might just check out. Never hurts to do a little more research in the name of monetary gain!

Since a lot of people use Google, you can understand that some people will pay over the odds to get a good advertising spot. Google really does give good results from the right audience, but having used Bing before I can safely agree that Bing is better in the long run as you save quite a bit of money. It's worth any time it takes to get your views.
