What kind of external flashes do you all have experience with? What kind of flash would you recommend to a new photographer?

I have a friend with a flash that mounts to his hotshoe that has a shade on it (like a lampshade) and that makes it so shadows aren't as harsh. He can also point the flash to the side or upwards and it looks great when he's taking pictures of people and the light is smoothly coming into the photo from the top.
