I have two class 10 SD cards, a 16GB SanDisk Extreme (which shows read speeds up to 30MB/s on the sticker) and a 16GB Transcend.
I tested both cards with continuous shooting on my T3i, and I conclude that that Transcend cuts down about .4 seconds between photos over the SanDisk Extreme. The Transcend also costs about a dollar less on Amazon right now, at $12.98.

It seems that the 16GB basic SanDisk SD card on Amazon right now is a SanDisk Ultra (which is technically a step above extreme, but the packaging still shows the 30 MB/s).
If anyone has one of these new basic SanDisk cards that say Ultra on them instead of Extreme (they're going for the same price as the old Extremes) it would be cool to see a benchmark.

What exactly does "Class 10" mean? I am really familiar with most computer accessories and equipment, but I've never heard of something like that before. Does it mean that it reads and writes data faster? If so, I may need to invest in one!
I think that I have a SanDisk Ultra laying around somewhere, but I don't really know the difference between an Ultra and an Extreme (except for the fact that one sounds cooler 
)

Yep! The class of a memory card tells you what it's rated for - A class 2 will do 2 MB/s, a class 6 will do 6 MB/s, and a Class 10 will do 10 MB/s.
A faster memory card helps a ton with continuous shooting because when the buffer on your camera is full the bottleneck becomes how fast that photo can be written from the buffer to the memory card. A faster memory card is also necessary for HD video shooting.
Many of the most popular ones nowadays are rated Class 10, but that doesn't mean that they're all the same performance-wise. With SanDisk, their Ultra line is the most popular, the Extreme line is a little pricier and "better", and the Extreme Pro line is the best memory cards they offer.

I noticed that almost all of the memory cards sold in stores are Class 10 already. I remember I had an old Class 4 a long time ago but it looks like that technology was replaced.

What SD card would you recommend right now for the best value for your money?
I'd recommend the same as The Wire -> This SanDisk Extreme 16GB for $18.40. You get a great value for your money and a card that'll last far into the future with its excellent speed.

How many photos are you guys able to get on a 16GB memory card? With high resolution shots...I'm always afraid that I wouldn't be able to fit enough that is why I chose to use a 32GB memory card. I have never maxed out my 32GB memory card so I know it's large enough for me right now. Once I get a DSLR though, I'm curious as to what size memory card I should aim for. What do you guys think?

16GB or 32GB would be my suggestion, it'll be cheaper to get multiple smaller cards than pay for a large-capacity memory card.
I have a 32GB and two 16GB, I think it's not too big of a hassle to swap out when one finishes. At 64GB of combined storage I'd worry about battery life being the limiting factor and not the storage capacity.
It depends on whether you use RAW or JPEG as well as the megapixel count on your DSLR
