I remember the first time I saw this photograph it was haunting.  I couldn't get the image out of my head.  I don't even remember where I saw it but I do remember looking it up and found out that the photograph was taken by Kevin Carter and he actually won the Pulitzer Prize for it.  He was told that he could not touch the child due to risk of diseases.  Although it is not known if it was due to direct relation to the experience of taking this photograph and being recognized for it Carter committed suicide 3 or 4 months after receiving the Pulitzer Prize.

A lot of people criticize photographers for taking pictures of such tragic events instead of going out to help the people in need, but I think that the impact made by capturing this moment and sharing it across the western world is much greater than the good done by helping a single individual. I'm sure Kevin received a lot of hate from this photo but in the long run this photo is going to help get a lot more aid for countries in need.
